Why not discover future pastors by whether they can lead and multiply a cell/house church? Great post. I was a NAMB church planter, now pastoring a church in Western Europe. I am partially funded by churches and individuals in the States, partially supported by the local church I pastor, and half my support comes through my "tent making", which is software programming.

Here is where I'd say we need to be careful, I don't believe we should say (nor do I believe you are) that this is the only way forward. Often times I feel we are looking for the one way to plant churches. I know of one couple where a husband is able to work full-time to support the family while his wife is then able to be full time in ministry.

Also, we need to be careful when planting churches that use bi-vo people as you suggest, that it is done in such a way to prevent burnout. I could picture the person working full time, then having to spend his evenings preparing Bible studies, sermons, visiting, leaving him little to no time with his own family.

I do appreciate the idea of planting churches that do not need a plethora of staff, buildings, and ministries, but would prefer to see them planted by perhaps two couples. One person would still be a in a lead role, but all four would be involved in teaching, allowing each to the time to prepare only one lesson per month.

I know of one church plant where it is co-lead by two "ordinary" men, sharing the preaching so each is only doing two per month. Even then, with their jobs and families, I see the strain they are both experiencing.

Even with my reservations, I think this is a great conversation and another great option that the church should explore. For too long the church has been divided into two groups, the paid "professionals" and the "unskilled" lay people.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3092233049004863717.post-20697355255513635672010-11-08T02:39:11.768-08:002010-11-08T02:39:11.768-08:00Interesting read. I think the skills that are assessed for in church planting are skills church plantere will need to continually develop. So in that sense they are good but can't help feeling the bar is set too high, if it all needs to be in place before you start a church. Can't see the qualifications as biblical.

For one I know I doubt I would pass an assessment like that. But I have been called by a local church and it's elders and I am planting a church. It may never be (and I hope it won't) be a mega church but with God's help it will be effective. I am completely dependent on my Saviour to achieve the purpose to which I am called. When things go well all I can do is praise Him.BenAboutLondonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10522179703855960189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3092233049004863717.post-50069124228128442942010-11-08T00:51:39.870-08:002010-11-08T00:51:39.870-08:00Very interesting. I really like your stand point and a agree that ordinary men are men God loves to work off of!Israel Zubiatenoreply@blogger.com
